What I'm Reading Now: Possible Side Effects

By Nicole Gencarelli

Since graduating college I had the time to do something I didn't have the time for in a while: reading for fun. Of course, I loved reading obscure, historical documents on the cult statue of Artemis in Ephesus, or women in Byzantine Mosaics,  but I did miss all the other genres out there! So for the rest of the fall blogging season here on gallery U, I will frequently be sharing with you some of my favorite books I am reading that week, and hopefully some of you will be inspired to go down to the local library or bookstore and check them out yourselves.
This week I am reading a book of personal essays by Augusten Burroughs, entitled Possible Side Effects. The author has numerous other books published, most of which are autobiographical. I love his writing because of his use of humor and tell-it-like-it-is way describing life, which is sometimes devastating, sometimes wonderful, and often something unexplainable. The essays in this book touch of some of the authors life experiences with alcoholism, being a hypochondriac, the drawbacks of peeping into people's windows, and stealing Harvard tee-shirts. Sometimes I can't read his books in public, because I start laughing too hard and people look at strangely.
