Photo-Story: A New Home

By MacKenzie Mercurio

Almost exactly a year ago I moved to a small village, named Lacoste, in the Provencal region of France to attend SCAD Lacoste for the fall quarter. I was 100% terrified out of my mind to be living in another country, especially one where I spoke very little of the language. Within a week I knew this place was incredibly special. Soon after I began to realize how exceptional this little village was, I met a very special person. Not only did my artwork excel, but so did myself as a person. I have never felt such content as I do when I am there.
Unfortunately I could only stay there from September to the end of November, but as soon as the applications were available I applied to come back for the summer of 2015. I was accepted and my time there ended up being the most incredible time in my life. Being put in so many situations that made me uncomfortable because I didn’t speak the language, didn’t fully understand the culture or just didn’t know many people was so exhilarating. Terrifying, of course, but exhilarating. Unfortunately I had to leave again, this time at the end of August, but when I graduate next year, I am planning to move there almost immediately. One of the directors of the school told me about the French term “Maladie du Pierre” which means “sickness of the stones” and can always be related to that of the stones in Provence, and for me, Lacoste. Here is a selection of my favorite images from this past summer.
SCAD Lacoste is a bit like summer camp.
Ran away from Lacoste for a weekend in La Seyne-Sur-Mer with the most amazing person I have ever met.
So many talented musicians living around Lacoste.
Graffiti written in SCAD’s quarry, one of my most beloved and hidden places in Lacoste.
