Just like the saying, “with the closing of one door, another one opens” I’ve been thinking a lot about the season of summer, for the month of July has promptly ended and August has quickly begun. It’s hard to believe that June and July have passed by so fast, but for me, the month of August holds many great things. It’s the month of the summer when the air is thickest and the sun strongest. It’s when we go out to the beach or the lake, soaking up every moment we can. It’s the perfect time to enjoy family and friends as we’re all ready to celebrate the presence of a great season.
So, as August comes upon me this year, I’ve been pondering lots of things; wondering what summer is all about, what it means and how we spend it. I’m immediately brought back to my childhood when summer break was the best time of the year — there was swimming, playing outside, family parties and, of course, delicious, sweet treats!
But, as time has passed and as I’ve
grown older, the excitement of summer has shifted and my pleasures are now
rooted in other aspects of the season’s greatness. This year’s
number one winner of awesomeness goes to farm fresh produce. I’m
constantly amazed by the beauty of what our earth can bear and I find so much
joy in the arrival of new produce.
There’s nothing more exciting than going to
the market and seeing the piles and piles of peaches that have just been
harvested from the trees. Or the beautiful round, red tomatoes just waiting to
be devoured. It’s so refreshing to know when something is in season and
that you have the pleasure of enjoying it right then and there. It’s
like Christmas morning but everyday, the whole summer long!
Sometimes when I go to
the market, I want to buy things just for their beauty. I may not necessarily
need more tomatoes, beets or greens but I can’t help to want to
surround myself with them!
I also find it incredibly satisfying when a particular
product's fruiting season has passed and it’s no longer buzzing around the market
like wild-fire. In our football field sized grocery stores we’re
so used to getting whatever we want, whenever we want. So, when the short three
weeks of strawberries has passed and blackberries now make waves, I feel
satisfied and joyful I was able to cherish those super fresh and juicy,
ruby-red berries. It reminds me that nature is ever changing and always
producing a beauty for us to enjoy.

For me, right now, that
is what summer is all about. Enjoying nature’s true beauty with
every quick, constant and wild change she makes.
