The Fourth

By Whitney Cole

Holidays are a wonderful excuse for me to spend time with my favorite photographic subjects: my family. Independence Day in particular is always fun for me as my birthday is in the same week. This usually makes for a several-day-long celebration. This year, we spent the weekend on the river.

The actual day of my birthday began with an incredibly nutritional tower of French toast, and ended with a riverfront scavenger hunt for birthday presents, initiated by my sister.

Thanks to a certain tiny dog with a tiny bladder, I was awakened at the crack of dawn the next day for some quality puppy potty time, but was awarded with a beautiful view. This view became the backdrop for what was a quiet, pleasant, and relaxing weekend with close family and friends, as well as the return of the itch to get back into the swing of photographing.

This time is intended to reflect on the importance of independence and how this country came to be. It seems only fitting that it has been nestled in a giant storm of controversy and legislature in our country, much of which has called into question some of what my heritage and identity has been related to. This has given me new meaning in going forward and creating my work. Not only can I show my own experiences as a Southerner in 2015, but I can also do this in a way that addresses that identity in the context of a contemporary society.

…Until next time.
