During the summer, it's easy to get inspired by the warm color palette that surrounds us and the abundance of sunlight, but it can be difficult to actually act upon this inspiration. If you're a student who's off for the summer, you no longer have the pressure of deadlines and class assignments to keep you creating on a schedule; and if you're a recent grad, then, well, it's almost always impossible to find the time to make art anymore. Follow Tuesday is here to help you add some motivation to your day by introducing you to cool creatives online who can inspire you to wipe the dust off your art utensils.
Take Marie Matter, of Wool & Weave, for example. This Baylor University alumni has curated an Instagram page that will make any artist who's in love with the rich world of fibers ecstatic. Her specialty is wall-hangings, which she weaves together using looms the size of a book, to the size of a doorway. Her hangings attach to a branch of wood by loops of string you can literally count before they drift off into a sea of busy, interlaced threads. She often takes advantage of the texture of her fabric, from silky and fluffy to stringy and thin — by letting the yarn stand alone without extra decorative elements. Yarn has a loud voice, and she lets it speak for itself by utilizing the unique simplicity of fringe in various lengths and placements, and a bubbly, braided technique that warmly invites its viewer to fall in love with texture. Her wall-hangings have a natural painterly quality to them — you could almost mistake the lines of yarn in these pieces for strokes of bold paint. When looking through her work you will most likely be reminded of various "scapes" from land, to sea, to city. Below is a peek into what her Instagram has to offer:
From bright pastels and glowing neons, to more earthy tones that seem to mimic the palette of deserts and seascapes, Marie uses color as a defining element in her painterly wall-hangings.
I think one of the most motivating aspects of her feed is that asides from sharing her finished creations, she also shares behind-the-scenes shots of her materials and workspace. It's so fun to see a snapshot of a half-done weaving still on the loom one day, then the finished piece hanging and ready to be sold the next day.
From the thickest and fluffiest spools to naturally-dyed and vintage threads, Marie makes sure to have a carefully selected pool of yarn before beginning one of her weavings (and of course, she also make sure to snap a photo of her selection before starting!).
Something that is inherent within every piece of fiber art is the incredible attention to detail. It's impossible to create a weaving that doesn't have many tiny details for you to squint at longingly, examining the way each thread looms beautifully over and under one another. The Wool & Weave Instagram does exactly this — inviting us to experience this aspect of fiber art with some really wonderful detail shots.
Make sure you follow Marie's shop, Wool & Weave, on Instagram, and Etsy to keep being inspired by her creativity.
