Current Inspiration Board

By Nicole Gencarelli

For this post I want to give you all some insight into my creative inspirations at the moment. I really enjoy the work of several different artists and frequently look to these individuals for inspiration for color choice, composition, and their use of materials.

Ghada Amer is an Egyptian Artist currently living and working in New York. Most of her work in focused on gender and sexuality, and includes multiple and layered images of females while using the embroidery floss and paint to obscure the image/images.

I had the great pleasure of meeting this artist in person while her work was hanging in the gallery space at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I loved her use of poetic inspiration, childhood memories, favorite literary stories and poems, and her beautiful, atmospheric style of painting. Her work is beautifully layered and the colors in her pieces are carefully chosen.

Alice Bloomfield is a Tumblr artist currently studying in Falmouth (London). She posted much of her work on her Tumblr site and is a talented artist in both drawing and collage work.

I’m also inspired by some of the pieces I find while browsing Tumblr, like these below:

I personally love listening and reading about artists discussing art, their own work, and how they hear their voice in the world. It is truly inspiring to me and pushes me to really examine my own artistic voice, the reasons and themes behind my own work, and how I want my art to impact a wider audience.

Nicole is a recent graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. You can follow her on Tumblr and her website.
